Steven is an Employment Law Solicitor with more than twenty years experience in all aspects of the discipline, working in both commerce and industry, as well as in private practice. This grounding means Steven can dissect an employment law issue and quickly identify a strategy and the best outcome and how to achieve it. He has worked in various sectors during his career including oil and gas and engineering and construction (Halliburton), waste management and environment (Suez Group), publishing and media (Highbury House Communications) and international risk management and security (Global Strategies Group). Through this experience, Steven has been also been involved in some employment law issues with an international dimension, involving Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the US. As a result Steven is well placed to understand the specific issues affecting businesses and has a good sense of commercial pragmatism.
Steven specifically enjoys project work, for example, the employment aspects of mergers, acquisitions and the disposal of businesses which necessitates undertaking the necessary due diligence and advising on compliance with the Transfer of Undertakings Regulations (TUPE). He also has an interest in the use of social media in the workplace and in ensuring that businesses have the best policies in place, and in generally advising on implementing best practice policies and procedures to avoid disputes and with the aim of retaining staff for business clients. He also deals with employment tribunal litigation which includes class actions, and career highlights include dealing with a large class action successfully defending a range of unfair dismissal , breach of contract and breach of TUPE claims.
Steven also has experience in advising businesses in various industries and sectors and of various sizes from multi-nationals down to start ups. This often involves advising HR professionals, Senior Management and decision makers on a variety of day-to-day employment-related issues. He enjoys advising on implementing “best practice” policies and procedures which are designed to protect and strengthen his clients’ position. Steven also advises a number of senior executives who require services and advice in relation to their individual employment rights and the negotiation of exit packages in the event that the employment relationship breaks down. This often results in negotiating the terms of a settlement agreement.
