About us

Harris & Co, the original incarnation of Meaby & Co Solicitors, was established by Henry Harris in 1848.

Walter Charles Meaby joined the firm, which was based at 63 Coleman Street, London, in the late 1890s and completed his articles in 1902. He subsequently became a partner and the firm became known as Harris, Meaby & Co. The firm was to become known simply as Meaby & Co following Henry Harris’ retirement. Walter Meaby was to work until the week before his death at the age of 87.

The firm moved offices over the years from Coleman Street, to 3 Budge Row, Canon Street, and then to Dowgate Hill House, Dowgate Hill EC4.

Walter’s son, Harold, having completed his articles at  Nick Howell & Haldance’ opened the Camberwell Branch over the Barclays Bank on Camberwell Green in 1927. This location was necessary because of a strong working relationship with the Camberwell Building Society (which was eventually to become the Chelsea Building Society).

Harold’s son, Brian Walter Meaby, joined the firm and began his articles in 1956. Brian had just finished his national service and made the tough decision to go into law rather than remain in the Royal Air Force on a permanent commission. At this time three generations of the Meaby family were working in the firm. When Harold Meaby retired in 1980, Brian became the senior partner.

Robert Meaby, Brian’s brother, began his articles at the firm in 1957. Robert was subsequently to manage the Peckham office, which Meaby & Co were to set up in the mid 1970s. This office was closed in the 1990s.

Bruce Streather joined the practice in 1999 following which Brain and Robert became consultants. Robert retired around a year later. Chris Sarsfield and Peter Russell subsequently joined the firm and have since become partners.

Meaby & Co’s longevity has been borne out of a history of excellent client care, and sound legal advice. The same ethos exists in the firm today, and we are determined to carry these standards into the future.
